 About Us

History

The Club has been established since 1965 and is a registered with the Kennel Club. It was the first dog obedience training club on the Isle of Man.  Its popularity grew and in a short time the club moved away from just being an obedience training centre to also encompass agility.

Our aims

The club is dedicated to helping the local environment and authorities in the continued education of all canine owners in the training and general education of dogs and owners alike in all aspects of dog ownership.
We occasionally compete with other local clubs in junior and advanced obedience competitions promoting dog training on another level. In addition to sponsoring events and conducting classes, we put on demonstrations at schools and fairs.
We are the only club on the Isle of Man who have instructors that are qualified with the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers.
We offer training through classes rather than individual tuition.  It is structured into the following classes: Newcomers, Beginners and a combined Intermediate and Advanced class, with a rotation of instructors taking each class in turn.  See the Classes and Courses section for more information.

Our aim is to help you have a better understanding and relationship with your dog and to make owning a dog a pleasure for you, your family and of course anyone with whom you come into contact.

We aim to encourage and teach our members to be responsible dog owners.

We also aim and succeed in having fun with our dogs at the same time as being able to socialise with like minded people.

We have a one club rule which means that you cannot be a member of any other Dog Obedience or Agility Club in the Isle of Man whilst a member of our Club which helps us to better monitor class sizes to ensure consistency and offer the best training we can.

Membership

Membership in the club is open to anyone who has an interest in dog sports.
The Club Membership is an annual subscription of £20.00 which insures you and your dog against accidents etc. Then each week you attend you pay a nightly training fee of £3.00 per dog.
For Junior handlers, who must be aged 10 years or over, pay an annual subscription fee of £10.00 and £1 for each class they attend.

Other club activities

The Club has many other activities other than its training nights, such as:

  • We take our dogs to many displays and demonstrations around the Island for charity events which have included displays at St Johns on Tynwald Day, the RNLI fun day and school fairs.
  • We have a 3 day Open Agility Show held during the first Bank Holiday in May and a 2 day Obedience Show in mid June, where competitors from England, Ireland and Jersey come across to the Island to compete against us.
  • We also organise the Obedience and Agility shows which are run in conjunction and on behalf of the Southern Agricultural Show at the end of July and the Royal Manx Agricultural Show at the beginning of August each year.
  • We also have several full sets of agility equipment for those who have obtained some control over their dogs and wish to take up this exciting sport.
  • We also stage various social events during the year, including barbecues, treasure hunts, quiz nights, barn dances and talks although of course we are open to any suggestion for other social events.
  • We hold our annual dinner in February, which is always a sociable and enjoyable evening, when we also award the trophies and stage award passes, obtained throughout the previous year.
  • Christmas parties both for dogs and humans.
  • Each training night, there is also a refreshment bar, which supplies everyone with a free cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate and gives you the chance to chat to other members.
